Chairs for the Elderly

Getting out of a chair is often the first thing that becomes hard, and a chair that sits too low or too soft makes it harder still. Everything on this page is here to help with that. There are two sorts. Riser recliners tilt gently forward at the press of a handset and bring you up on to your feet. Fixed armchairs have a high back and a firmer, supportive seat you can get out of unaided. Chairs run from £399.99 to £1,499.99, with a matching three-seater sofa at £1,595.

Riser recliner chairs

These do the standing up for you. A single motor tilts the whole chair forward to bring you to your feet. A dual motor raises the footrest separately, so you can put your legs up while still sitting upright. A four motor chair adds separate control of the lumbar support in the small of your back and of the headrest. Two of our chairs also warm you as you sit. Fixed armchairs and sofas

If you can still get up unaided and simply want a chair that helps rather than hinders, a traditional armchair with a high back and a supportive sprung seat may be all you need. Our fixed chairs are built on hardwood frames, with a choice of fabrics and leathers.

• Windsor Petite Chair — the most compact of them, for a smaller lounge, bedroom or conservatory, with a raised seat height that makes standing up easier.
• Brompton Chair (£995) — a traditional fireside wing-back, and the one to ask about if seat height matters: it comes in low, standard and high seat versions.
• Lynton Chair and Lynton Legged Chair (£1,095) — scroll arms, a high back and sprung seating.
• Lynton 3 Seater Static Sofa (£1,595) — the matching sofa, supplied in interlocking sections so it will go through a narrow hallway or doorway.

VAT relief and spreading the cost

A chair has to fit the person in it — your height, your reach and the way you get up out of it. That is very hard to judge from a photograph, so the best thing is to come and try one.
