Question 1 of 8

How long does a mobility scooter battery last?

On average, a well-maintained mobility scooter battery lasts between 18 and 24 months, or up to 3 years for higher-quality models. How long yours lasts depends on how often you use the scooter, how far you go, the hills on your usual route, the cold, and how it is charged and stored.

Most people do not notice a battery wearing out, because it happens a little at a time. A trip you once made easily starts to feel tight, then the gauge drops on the hill home. If you used to get 20 miles out of your scooter but now only manage 10, your battery may be losing capacity.

Signs it is the battery

  • Noticeably fewer miles from a full charge
  • The gauge drops away as soon as you set off or reach a slope
  • Slower, or hesitating on hills it used to manage
  • It no longer holds its charge overnight

Signs it could be the charger

  • The charging light behaves differently from how it used to
  • The scooter is not charging fully, even overnight
  • The charger or its leads look damaged
  • You are using a charger that did not come with your scooter

A faulty charger can mimic battery problems, so it is worth ruling it out first. Try a different wall socket and look over the charger and leads for damage. Always use the charger that came with your scooter, or one recommended by the manufacturer. An incorrect or cheap charger can cause charging problems and damage your battery over time.

If the battery case looks swollen or cracked, or there is any sign of a leak, stop using the scooter and ring us.

Getting the right battery fitted

Every scooter takes a particular battery. The size, the terminals and the amp hour rating all have to match, which is why we price batteries for your scooter rather than sell them from a list. It helps to have these to hand:

  • The make and model of your scooter
  • Whether it takes one battery or a pair
  • The rating printed on the old battery, for example 12V 22Ah
  • Whether it is sealed lead acid or lithium, if you know

Our service department covers all makes and models. Home visits are available, fixed-price callouts include 15 minutes labour, and over 90% of repairs are completed on site. Visits depend on engineer availability, so the team will confirm what they can do when you get in touch.

New battery or new scooter?

A new battery can give a sound scooter a new lease of life. But if your scooter is older, you are not getting on with it any more, or the battery is one of several things going wrong, it can make more sense to change the scooter.

We buy used mobility scooters, take part exchanges against something new, and can sell your scooter on your behalf. With part exchange, whatever we can offer comes off the price of your new scooter. You can book a store demonstration, bring your old scooter with you, and try new ones while a specialist looks over yours. Find out how part exchange works.

Battery questions we get asked

How do I make my new battery last longer?

Use the charger that came with your scooter. Charge after you have been out rather than running the battery flat first, and take it off charge once it is full instead of leaving it on for days. Regular charging, avoiding overuse and proper storage all help extend its life.

Can I use any charger with my mobility scooter?

Always use the original charger or one recommended by the manufacturer. Using an incorrect or cheap charger can cause charging problems and damage your battery over time.

Do you replace batteries on scooters you did not sell?

Yes. Our service team works on all makes and models of mobility scooter, whether you bought it from us or somewhere else.

How much is a new mobility scooter battery?

It depends on your scooter. A small folding scooter and a road scooter are not asking for the same thing. Tell us the make and model and we will give you a price for yours.

Do you do powered wheelchair batteries too?

Yes. Ring with the make and model and the team will work out what it needs.
